God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness: When We Suppress the Spirit
Men, let’s be honest. We don’t always listen to God. We don’t always follow the Holy Spirit’s leading. Too often, we allow our flesh to dictate our actions, our desires to drive our decisions, and our pride to convince us that we are in control. But deep down, we know that when we suppress the Spirit, when we ignore what God has called us to do, we are walking in unrighteousness. And Romans 1:18-32 is clear—when we reject His truth, God turns away.
The Truth We Refuse to Face
Romans 1:18 tells us that “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” This isn’t just about the world’s rebellion against God—it’s about us, as men, refusing to submit to the truth He has placed in our hearts. We know what is right, yet we choose what is easy. We feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit, yet we silence it with distractions, ambitions, or outright disobedience.
God has called us to lead, to stand firm in faith, to act with integrity, and to be living sacrifices. But how often do we exchange those things for temporary pleasures, for the approval of others, or for the comfort of mediocrity? The truth is, when we resist the Spirit’s prompting, we are walking toward destruction.
When God Lets Us Go
Romans 1:24 says, “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.” That is one of the most terrifying things God can do—to let us have our way. When we continue to resist Him, He eventually lets us go. Not in an act of cruelty, but in justice. If we are unwilling to listen, unwilling to repent, unwilling to walk in faith, He allows us to experience the consequences of our choices.
Men, this is why we feel lost, why we feel distant from God, why we wrestle with sin and cannot seem to overcome it. It’s not that God has abandoned us—it’s that we have refused to abide in Him. And when we do that, He lets us experience what life is like when we walk in the flesh rather than in the Spirit.
The Call to Return
But God’s desire is never to leave us there. His call to repentance is always before us. Romans 1:32 speaks of those who know God’s righteous decree yet still choose sin. But today, we have a choice. Will we continue suppressing the truth? Will we keep resisting the Spirit? Or will we surrender, repent, and allow the Holy Spirit to redefine our identity?
We were not made to be passive, weak men who bow to the pressures of the world or the temptations of our flesh. We were made to be men of faith, men who stand firm, men who obey the voice of God no matter the cost. We must stop suppressing the truth and start acting in faith. That is the only way to walk in righteousness, the only way to avoid the wrath of God, and the only way to be the men He has called us to be.
A Challenge for Every Man
Brothers, if you feel distant from God today, ask yourself: Am I suppressing the Holy Spirit? Am I living according to the flesh instead of faith? The time for excuses is over. It is time to return to Him, to walk in obedience, and to reclaim the identity God has given us.
Do not wait for another moment. Repent, seek His presence, and let the Spirit lead you again. For when we walk in the Spirit, we walk in righteousness. And when we walk in righteousness, we walk in the favor of God.
Let’s be the men God has called us to be.
