1. Stewardship & Personal Responsibility
As a believer in Christ, we have a responsibility to maintain the gifts God has bestowed upon us. What does this mean for married men?
How am I being a good steward of the wife I have been given?
I have been asking myself this lately.
As the world replaces God’s authority with its own, men must swiftly examine their own lives and rise to the call he has upon our lives and our homes.
I am speaking specifically to married men.
Standing strong in our faith, acting like men, and staying strong. (1 Cor 16:13)
Managing our household well, with dignity and keeping our children submissive. (1 Tim 3:4)
Understand our wives, honoring them as they are the weaker vessel (1 Peter 3:7)
Love your wives, and do not be harsh with them (Colossians 3:19)
If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10)
There is a direct command from God for us to be good stewards to our wives.
Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, (1 Timothy 3:2)
Why have Christian men dropped the ball? I know exactly why, it starts with fathers.
And so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. (Titus 2:4-5)
Everything Good Starts at Home
Adam was first in the Garden of Eden. Adam was blessed with Eve. Adam failed to lead and instruct his wife.
If you notice, it wasn’t until the eyes of both of them were opened, they realized they were naked (Genesis 3:7)
This was a crucial moment of opportunity for Adam to lead his wife and to be a good steward of what God gave him. Eve did not realize she was naked until her husband ate. This begs one to consider the weight of the role of the man in leading his home.
In Genesis 2:15 it states, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
It was Adam’s role to be a good steward of what God gave him.
The calling of Adam to care for the garden was in Genesis 2:15. Immediately after he instructed Adam to take care of the garden, he gave him a helper fit for him.
At the start of Genesis 3 Eve speaks with the serpent about eating from the tree in the midst of the garden. Eve disregarded God’s instruction and ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
In Genesis 3:6, things get very interesting.
1st: Adam allows his wife to be swayed by the serpent. Adam is with Eve, and he does nothing to lead.
2nd: It was not until Eve gave Adam the fruit and he ate that both of their eyes were opened.
This is a clarifying moment in scripture. Adam had an opportunity to nurture his wife and be a good steward of what God gave him, but he didn’t.
Broken homes
As men, when we leave our parent’s home and become one flesh (Genesis 2:24), our roles shift forever.
Considering we are one in flesh, it begs the question, "If Adam had not eaten the fruit from the tree, would sin have been introduced to the world?”
No one can say yes or no with certainty. But when reading that we “become one flesh,” it sounds quite clear to me that Adam had the opportunity to do what is right, after his wife had sinned.
Could Adam have turned the situation around?
I believe so. Considering we are one in flesh, this also suggests something else.
As men fail to lead at home and in our nation, women and our wives have stepped up.
Scripture reveals who God made to lead the family and the household.
Further, 1 Timothy 2:15 says this, “Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.”
This reveals to me in a vivid way the ways in which the devil wants to attack my home.
The home will continue to be broken as long as men do not lead the way God intended. It is even fair to say that mistakes will in fact happen within the home, but God gives man the freedom and autonomy to get his home back on track. God’s grace knows no bounds.
But if we do not heed scripture and listen to the heresy of this world, there will be much worse in this world than we see right now.
God is calling all men to step up
Time is the scarcest asset on planet Earth. There is no time to waste. As men, we must heed God’s calling on our lives.
There are tremendous challenges men face before entering holy matrimony. That topic is meant for another day.
To fulfill God’s calling on the church and in our lives, we are commanded to honor his word. John 14:15 says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
Immediately after the Lord promises us the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-31)
The Holy Spirit is with us daily; no one can take that gift away. Through our prayer with Him, Christ gave us the discernment of the Holy Spirit to interpret the scriptures as well as understand God’s calling in our lives.
We have peace, no fear, and nothing to worry about. No matter the challenge the world presents, God gave us his Holy Spirit to handle anything we encounter.
Rise, let us go from here. Raise our families the way God intended.
